People are drawn to zodiac tattoo designs for a plethora of reasons. Mankind has had an infatuation with the magnetism and romanticism that lives are influenced by celestial heavens. The zodiac represents a belt of constellations that fall in the elliptic path between the earth and the sun. this belt is then divided into 12 sections and each constellation has a story, meaning and image associated with it.

The History of Zodiac Tattoo Designs

The Greek word “zôè” means “life” and “diakos” means “wheel” which gives the word zodiac its meaning. Zodiac symbols are rooted from the Middle East dating back approximately 4,700 years B.C when Egypt’s Great Pyramid was constructed to precisely line up to the North Star. The in depth study of the constellations is believed to have began in Mesopotamia which is now Iraq. Babylonians developed a writing form and recorded stargazing predictions to benefit the king.

Later, Egyptians expanded on this, focusing primarily on Ra, the sun god. A Greek astronomer, Claudius Ptolemy who was residing in Egypt blended the Greek and Mesopotamian views to develop what is known now as astrology. Interestingly, little has changed.

Four Elements

Of course the obvious zodiac images come to mind that are associated with your birthday but each zodiac is also associated with one of the four elements of earth, air, water or fire. Elements are linked to personality characteristics.

  • Earth – Works very hard to achieve goals.
  • Air – Tries to create unification.
  • Water – Sensitive and emotional.
  • Fire – Self expression without fear.

A unique way to customer zodiac tattoo designs is to include artwork of the corresponding element. While it is absolutely not necessary to incorporate these, it will lend a bit of individuality.

Zodiac Tattoo Meanings

Capricorn Tattoos (December 23 – January 20) – Represented by the goat, Capricorns are usually practical, ambitious, disciplined, patient, careful, patient and humorous. However, then can also be pessimistic and hold grudges. The symbol is often used as a tribal or Celtic centerpiece for extended pieces of art.

Aquarius Tattoos (January 21 – February 19) – Great strong points include a friendly outlook, loyalty, honesty, independence, originality and intellectual. The strengths of this water carrier are balanced with their weaknesses of being unpredictable, detached or unemotional. Aquarius symbols have made a sudden burst of popularity.

Pisces Tattoos (February 20 – March 20) – Known as the “fish” but Pisces is represented by two fish swimming in opposite directions. Pisces, being ruled by Neptune are imaginative, sensitive, kind, compassionate and selfless but their darker side brings out weaknesses of secrecy, vagueness or are far to idealistic. A soft sea green hue is the traditional color choice for Pisces tattoos.

Aries Tattoos (March 21 – April 20) – The ram that represents Aries is the god of war for the Romans and Greeks. Strengths of Aries include being energetic, adventurous, confident, courageous, dynamic and enthusiastic. However, they are known to be quick tempered, impatient, selfish and impulsive. The representative color for Aries tattoos is red.

Taurus Tattoos (April 21 – May 21) – Ruled by Venus, the “bull” is patient, reliable, persistent, determined and loving but they can be quite jealous, inflexible, possessive, resentful and greedy. Oddly, the traditional color is soft pink which really does not fit the characteristics.

Gemini Tattoos (May 22 – June 21) – Represented by twins so it only makes sense that they can be dual-natured. The Gemini’s strong points are versatility, adaptability, communicative, intellectual and lively however, they are known for being superficial, nervous and tense. Traditionally, Gemini tattoos are usually portrayed as the symbol but the animal is the wolf which many people are not aware of.

Cancer Tattoos (June 22 – July 22) – Ruled by the moon, represented by the crab with a traditional color of silver. Positive traits include being loving, imaginative, intuitive, sympathetic and protective. Flaws include being overemotional and moody. The pearl symbol is usually chosen for tattoo choice over the crab.

Leo Tattoos (July 23 – August 22) – The “lion” is known to be the most extroverted and dominant of all the zodiac signs. They are warm-heated, generous, enthusiastic, creative and born leaders but they are not without their flaws of being bossy, pompous and intolerant. Ruled by the sun, Leos are associated with the color gold and rubies.

Virgo Tattoos (August 23 – September 23) – The virgin, represented by a woman, Virgos are shy, modest, reliable, practical, analytical and intelligent however they can be harsh, over critical, worriers and perfectionists. Traditional colors are green and dark brown.

Libra Tattoos (September 24 – October 23) – Balanced scales symbolize Libras and they are known for being romantic, diplomatic, idealistic and easy going but on a bad day then can be flirtatious, gullible and self-indulgent.

Scorpio Tattoos (October 24 – November 22) – Scorpios are the most profound, intense people of the zodiac. Their strong points are magnetism, excitement, passion, power and determination. They are also resentful, jealous, obsessive, compulsive and secretive. Ruled by Pluto, Scorpions are known to be venomous by birth.

Sagittarius Tattoos (November 23 – December 22) – Ruled by Jupiter, a centaur archer represents this sign. Sagittarians are straightforward, intellectual, freedom-loving and optimistic but on a bad day they are careless, optimistic, restless, tactless and irresponsible. The centaur is half horse and half human which is a strong statement on a tattoo.
